Initial Release (08/07/2010)

An initial release has finally been uploaded as well as a new screenshot. The binaries avaliable in the download section can be extracted anywhere.

OpenCDE can be started when X11 starts by putting [opencde path]/bin/opencde in your .xinitrc file. However before doing so, please make sure that xli has been installed prior to running OpenCDE.

I would be greatful if people could report back to me any bugs etc... with the binary distributions either using my contact details or via the forums.

New screenshot (13/06/2010)

Due to time constraints and workload from coming to the end of my placement, work on OpenCDE had slowed somewhat. However, I did find some time to add another screenshot to the collection showing the project's current progress. It also demonstrates the few new icons.

The great target (19/05/2010)

I have received a large number of emails asking when the first release is ready. I have decided to work primarily on the panel in order to get a first usable release out for people to have a proper play with. One day I might also finish this website too.

Another question that pops up often is what precompiled binaries will be avaliable. This largely depends on the amount of interest since I only really have access to a FreeBSD development machine but having said that, I have had offers from people who will be happy to compile binaries for Linux, OpenBSD and oddly enough, Mac OS X.

Hopefully not long now folks, I aim to find time to get the main panel part to a usable state within the next week.

Gone public... (12/04/2010)

After much interest was shown after my talk on OpenCDE during a conference at Bournemouth University I have decided to start providing public releases for others to enjoy. Whilst these releases will be generally unsuitable as a desktop environment for casual use, it will provide an idea of the current stage of the project. I will be able to provide a limited amount of support for the current release.

Good luck!

OpenCDE 0.4.3 Released! (09/02/2011)

Many improvements made to motifmm and OpenCDE with the addition of two new utilities (Media Manager and Task Manager). Work has been done to the login manager to fix a few bugs.

OpenCDE 0.3.7 Released! (01/02/2011)

The new C++ GUI library, motifmm has been used to provide the Motif UI widgets, removing the dependency on wxWidgets. More information can be found here.

I have decided to release motifmm under the same licence as OpenCDE (BSD 2-clause) which can be found here.

OpenCDE 0.3.5 FreeBSD Package Released! (11/12/2010)

After finally finishing some software to aid automate the generation of the pkg-plist, a preliminary version of the 32-Bit FreeBSD package has been completed. This version is identical to version 0.3.2 but the build system has been changed considerably so I have bumped up the version number to 0.3.5. The FreeBSD package does not have a dependency on wxMotif (since it is statically linked). The latest linux binaries will also be added to the download page shortly.

OpenCDE 0.3.2 Released! (11/11/2010)

OpenCDE 0.3.2 has been released. Changes include removing dependence on sudo, an integrated OpenCDE screensaver, improved build environment and new cross platform script system. I have also added the BSD license to the project page here.

OpenCDE 0.3.0 Released! (21/10/2010)

OpenCDE 0.3.0 has finally been released. Many changes have been made to the file manager as well as a text editor being introduced.

Two new screenshots have been added to the Screenshots page which demonstrate some of the changes.

If anyone has trouble compiling this release, please feel free to email me or post in the forums. Compilation has been tested on FreeBSD 8.1 RELEASE only.

New Ports (18/10/2010)

In preparation for the release of OpenCDE 0.3.0 I have completed and uploaded a preliminary version of the wxmotif port which should aid users in compiling OpenCDE on FreeBSD.

Once the port is deemed stable enough I can start releasing OpenCDE as a FreeBSD package which can be used with `pkg_add`.

The wxmotif port can be found in the Download section as well as a port for the nimbus GTK theme engine which I created whilst learning about the FreeBSD ports system.
